Can it be? Has Mark Calcavecchia decided to hit the gym and start getting in shape now that he is 47?
OK, let's not get crazy. But because of the rugged terrain at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, site of the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship, Calc decided last week he should do something to prepare for this week.
He hiked up the South Mountain in Phoenix (there are some steep trails there) three times last week to try to get ready for the hilly Plantation fairways. After the last time he played at Kapalua, he really felt really fatigued and his legs were feeling it the most. They were so bad he had an MRI done on his right knee to make sure he didn't injure anything.
I will give him credit, he has made the effort to try to improve his fitness level so he can play better. I like the fact that he went hiking too, he didn't just do some walking in the park. He challenged his body, something too many people don't do when they get in the gym.
If you don't want to go for a hike and you have a treadmill, try this routine to simulate walking the hills of a golf course. Keep the pace at a walking speed that is faster than your normal walk, one that challenges you. That could be anywhere from 3.0 to 4.2

This is a form of interval training and a great starting point. It's not rocket science but it's amazing how many people get on a piece of cardio equipment and just do a steady state routine for 45 minutes. This will be much more efficient, more fun and will transfer better to your golf game.
