Yesterday, I reviewed DVD 1 of Power Development for Golfers
Power Development for Golfers is World Renowned Strength & Conditioning Coach Michael Boyle's 2 DVD package that walks you through the whole process of developing strength and power for golf and progresses you through the exercises with a 9 week, 3 phase cycle. I think every golfer who is interested in improving fitness, decreasing the potential for injury and potentially improving performance, should get it.
In DVD 1, the warm-up sequence goes like this:
- Thoracic mobility
- Foam rolling
- 3-D stretching
- Ankle mobility
- Core/Activation
- Lunge Matrix
- Movement Preparation
After doing this (it looks like a lot but it goes by quick, there is only 1 set of each), your body will be prepared for the Power and Strength part of the workout.
In DVD 2, Strength and Power, Coach Boyle starts out with some medicine ball throws for power. In Phase 1, he has you in the "Tall-kneeling" and "Half-kneeling" positions. These positions will help you learn to throw the ball correctly, and avoid any compensations. It is a great, safe way to start that will teach you proper technique. To get the most out of power development exercises, technique is key.
In Phase 2, you start to stand up and Phase 3 he shows a "Stepping Forward Standing Overhead Throw", so you can see the progression takes you from being on the ground to a full body movement.
Each Phase also contains a lower body plyometric exercise. The Phase 1 and Phase 2 exercises are on an MVP Shuttle so these will be hard to do. I haven't come across the MVP Shuttle in too many gyms and I would bet that you don't have one at home. In Phase 3, there is an "Up to Box" jump that you can do anywhere. Worst case scenario, you skip that part or do the "Up to Box" jump to a really low level.
Next, we move to the Strength portion. Each Phase has 3 sequences, each with 3 exercises. There is usually an upper body, a lower body and a core exercise, although it's not always like that. I love Coach Boyle's progressions because he has a "same but different" approach that makes it easy to follow. The Phases all have good synergy and you get a full body workout.
Power Development for Golfers is really a great couple of DVDs that golfers can immediately benefit from. Coach Boyle has trained some of the world's best athletes and he is the guy that thousands of trainers look to for advice. He has a way of taking difficult concepts and putting them into an easy to understand system.
Special Bonus- I loved these DVDs so much that I made a companion worksheet that my clients can use when they are not with me. If you purchase Power Development for Golfers, I will send you the companion worksheet (PDF) that you can use to track your progress. Just forward me the receipt from Perform Better and I will email it to you. Send your receipt to Anthony@GolfFitnessProducts.net.

Thanks for the in-depth review. How do you think this dvd compares to Core Performance for Golfers book or dvd?
