Welcome to Blue Collar Mondays.
Every Monday, Troy Anderson of The Blue Collar Golfer, will add his insight to the Better Golf with Fitness Blog. His articles have appeared on GolfFitnessProducts.net as well as magazines all over the Southwest, and he has been a part of all of The Virtual Roundtables. Troy has a different approach than most golf fitness experts, one he is very successful with training golfers in Arizona.
What do Camilo Villegas and Ray Lewis have in common?
Have you figured it out yet?
Let me give you a hint; take a look at their “address position”.
That’s right! They are both elite athletes.
I am sure that many of you think that I have lost mind, but bear with me for a moment. Many will argue that golfers are not athletes, but all you really have to do is compare a golfers address to a middle linebacker pre-snap stance, (or any other athletic stance) to realize that YES, indeed golfers ARE ATHLETES.
Now that we have that cleared up, the logical progression would seem to be for golfers to physically train like an athlete.
Does that mean golfers need to be performing a 400lb power clean? Nope, but it might mean performing some type of total body explosive movement like a dumbbell or kettlebell swing.
Does that mean golfers need to run 40 yd sprints until they puke? No again, but on the same token some endurance training, something as simple as some incline walking on a treadmill or even better get out and do some light hiking would benefit this type of athlete.
Now that you have accepted that you are an athlete, let’s start training like one. In the realm of athletic preparation the #1 goal is to stay injury free. From there you need to work on developing attributes you maybe lacking such as strength, power/speed, endurance, etc. Although you won’t perform the exact same drills other athletes use, you will use the “same but different principle” as discussed above.
This is the type of preparation that set the golf athlete apart from the “wannabe.”
Next week, I will share a simple drills that will help you get started becoming a better golf athlete.
