Welcome to the First Edition of Blue Collar Mondays.
Every Monday, Troy Anderson of The Blue Collar Golfer, will add his insight to the Better Golf with Fitness Blog. Troy has a different approach than most golf fitness experts, one he is very successful with training golfers in Arizona.
Flexibility Only One Piece of the Puzzle
Physical training is still far from the norm in the golf community, but it's definitely starting to gain some momentum. With this momentum one of the more widely “accepted” terms /concepts is FLEXIBILITY Training.
Flexibility is undoubtedly a major part of the golf conditioning
equation. There's one problem: having only good flexibility is like
having a corvette with no engine.
Being able to twist and turn like Gumby is fine and well, but you still need the
horsepower
to put that flexible body in motion. There are plenty of golfers with
good flexibility but are weaker than your 6 year old niece! Sorry but
that just doesn’t get the job done.
So if flexibility isn't the complete answer what is?
Ultimately, a good golf conditioning program should seek to produce efficient movements that will have relevant carry-over to golf.
How does one go about this? Perform all conditioning movements/drills with proper technique thru a full range of motion.
I will go into specific exercises in future entries. For now still work on your flexibility but make sure you are utilizing your full range of motion during your strength exercises.
